GET BENT!: Track: A. Rex & J. Rex - Rock & Roll Heart

jivar:

Gettin vibed over at Get Bent!

By Zach Braun

According to the only bit of information on this Brooklyn’s duo’s Facebook page, “A. Rex & J. Rex concern themselves with two things only: (1) rock and (2) roll.” Judging by the super-catchy “Rock & Roll Heart,” that means rockabilly-influenced tunes that mix a punk rock…

nonsensenoir:

for four months we were a nation of two, tethered to a small apartment, stuck in the middle of a university that neither of us identified with or knew our place in. We invented a drink named “Topanga” and our mojitos never came out right and we talked in circles about Generation Apocalypse, about the end of the world as the narcissist’s Get Out of Jail Free card, about the end of the world as the world’s greatest excuse to party. E tried to write it as a musical and I tried to write it as a novel and we were So Down With the Rapture but the rapture never came and we never finished what we were writing.

I listened to Japandroids nonstop. Post-Nothing was gloriously preapocalyptic - an ode to youth in all its fragile intensity, a go-hard anthemic call-to-arms to stay awesome and never get old. Things got bleak but Japandroids were fire.

two years later, the world has still not quite ended, although i hear there’s a deadline fast approaching. two years later, also known as two weeks ago, i went down to Texas and met this band called Tropical Punk from Nashville and they have this superfun album called Ends of the World about being young and basements and end-of-the-world parties. it’s not Post-Nothing because nothing else can be Post-Nothing, but the theme is now real close to my heart, as is the punk-to-the-rescue good-time magic.

and if we had this album then, we’d play the hell out of it.

as i plan to, right now.

Liz interviews Tropical Punk at sxsw in Fast Folks bike shop! Thanks!

bostonphoenix:

At SXSW 2012 the Phoenix met up with Nashville’s Tropical Punk — last seen by us when they destroyed a couple of Allston basement ragers last year. They brought a similarly spirited show to Cheer Up Charlie’s in Austin the night before we sat down for an interview in the back of Fast Folks bike shop in East Austin. We talked about Nashville mostly, plus how they all met, SXSW, and their experiences playing Boston DIY shows. An appropriate track to check out after watching this interview is “Together In Texas”, a song they penned at SXSW a couple of years ago. It appears on their new LP Ends of the World. According to the band: “It’s called Ends Of The World because on the second Wednesday of every month for the past three years, we have a party and pretend the world is ending at midnight. The album is really about that.” Rad.

Via Flickr: This is the cover I was commissioned to do for Music Band’s new cassette “Satan’s Grave”. people occasionally will ask to commission like a portrait of their baby and I will wonder if they’ve even seen what I draw. these guy’s came to me and said they either wanted some jacked up looking demon or some dirtbag kids. clearly they had done their research on me. seriously though, these guy’s were a pleasure to work with. go out and buy their damn cassette.

our dogg Will Laren killed the artwork for our new record! we have the tapes for sale now and they look really great. you can send an email to denimrecords@gmail.com to order.

The Official Unofficial SXSW Showlist

WHERE YOU SHOULD BE THIS WEEK

Including…

Siiickxsw Wed 14th @ Cheer Up Charlies

8:30 - Tropical Punk

letsgetbent:

As you may have heard, GET BENT will be around Austin for SXSW. In preparation, we’ve been compiling a list of all the sick shows we’d be checking out if we could be in every place at once, but since we can’t, you’ll have to check em out for us. See our picks for unofficial parties after the cut, and email your show lineups to info@getbent.fm to be added (however, we will use our personal discretion in determining what makes the list; go to showlistaustin.com for a more general rundown). You can also read a preview in The Austin Cut, penned by our own Editor Rebecca Seung. So go ahead and crack open that beer cause SXSW is only a week away and your liver could use the practice.
